Best Blueberry Smoothie Recipe

Best Blueberry Smoothie Recipe

For the best blueberry smoothie, use frozen blueberries! This is my favorite blueberry smoothie recipe. You need less than 5 minutes to make it.

Best Blueberry Smoothie

Our family loves these super simple blueberry smoothies. It’s a perfect breakfast or snack that adults and kids will love (my toddler loves these smoothies).

You can even make a big batch, freeze it, and enjoy these delicious smoothies another day (tips are below). For more, see all of our easy smoothie recipes.

Key Ingredients

  • Frozen blueberries: For the best smoothies, use frozen blueberries. I especially love frozen wild blueberries, which give the smoothie in our photos that bright, vivid purple color. Fresh blueberries make smoothies really thick like jelly (they are full of pectin, which freezing reduces).
  • Banana: I always add banana to my smoothies since it makes them super creamy. Frozen bananas are best if you have some.
  • Half an orange: I love oranges in smoothies, too, and use them when making our basic banana smoothie and this strawberry banana smoothie. They add extra vitamin C and tropical flavor.
  • Milk (dairy or non-dairy): You need a little liquid to help everything blend. I usually use non-dairy milk, but use whatever you have on hand. Water works in a pinch, too.
  • Optional: I love adding nut butter (try almond butter or peanut butter), hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flaxseed meal.

How to Freeze Fruit for a Better Smoothie

You can freeze your fresh blueberries for these smoothies. I promise freezing makes for a better smoothie (especially, when it comes to blueberries). You can also freeze bananas, which makes your smoothie more creamy. You can even prepare and freeze smoothie packs for a grab-and-blend smoothie option.

  1. Rinse the blueberries. Pat them dry, then arrange them on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet.
  2. Slice bananas and place them onto the baking sheet.
  3. Slide the baking sheet into the freezer and freeze until hard (about 2 hours).
  4. When the fruit is hard, divide it between freezer-safe bags and freeze it for your next smoothie. They will last up to 2 months.

Best Blueberry Smoothie

Our blueberry smoothie is so creamy and delicious. Depending on how ripe or sweet your fruit is, you may need to add a little extra honey, so add based on your taste. I prefer frozen blueberries over fresh ones since they blend into a creamier smoothie.

Makes 2 kid-size smoothies or 1 large

Watch Us Make the Recipe

You Will Need

1 ¼ cup frozen blueberries

1 medium ripe banana or use 1 cup frozen banana slices

Half of a medium orange, peeled and quartered

3/4 cup to 1 cup milk, dairy or non-dairy

Optional Ingredients

1 tablespoon almond butter, peanut butter or cashew butter

1 teaspoon chia seeds

1 teaspoon hemp seeds

1 teaspoon flax seeds

1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup

Directions

1Add the blueberries, banana, orange and 3/4 cup of the milk to a blender. If you plan to add any, add optional ingredients to the blender.

2Turn the blender on and blend until creamy and smooth. If the smoothie is too thick, add a bit more milk. Add a few ice cubes and blend until smooth for an icy cold smoothie.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Storing: You can keep this smoothie in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours (I use a mason jar with its lid). The ingredients may separate over time, but you can shake the jar before serving.
  • How to freeze: To save the smoothie for later, pour each serving into a food-safe resealable plastic bag or container and freeze. Then, about an hour before needing the smoothie, take it out from the freezer.
  • The nutrition facts below are estimates for the basic smoothie made with unsweetened soy milk.
