Bang Bang Sauce Recipe

Bang Bang Sauce Recipe

This Bang Bang sauce is creamy, a bit sweet, a bit spicy, and irresistible with shrimp, chicken, salmon, and so much more!

Bang Bang Sauce

We first fell for Bang Bang sauce at Bonefish Grill, where the shrimp came tossed in this creamy, sweet, and spicy pink sauce. It was so good, we kept going back just for that sauce! This is our homemade version, and we put it on everything. It’s perfect with shrimp (here’s our Bang Bang shrimp recipe), but also chicken, fish, burgers (shrimp burgers are a must), fries, and more.

I love keeping a jar of this sauce in the fridge. It lasts for a week and makes dinner so much more exciting. I drizzle it over just about anything, and I’m pretty sure it’ll become a staple in your kitchen too.

Key Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise: This is the base of our Bang Bang sauce recipe. We love a good-quality mayo or homemade mayo. If you want to make it a little healthier, you can swap in plain thick yogurt (like Greek yogurt). For a vegan version, use vegan mayo (and leave out the honey).
  • Thai Sweet Chili Sauce: You can find a bottle in most grocery stores. It’s sweet, tangy, and just a little bit spicy. Mae Ploy and Lee Kum Lee are quite common.
  • Sriracha: This brings a bit more heat. If you’re sensitive to spice, just use a little less.
  • Lime Juice: Not many recipes include this, but we love it. The fresh lime wakes up the sauce, makes it a little more tangy and cuts through the sweetness.
  • Honey: Any local, flavorful honey works here. We love the floral flavor, and it helps balance the sriracha. You can leave it out if you need to, but we think it makes the sauce taste even better.

How to Make Bang Bang Sauce

Tip 1: Mix well. Grab a small bowl and stir the Bang Bang sauce ingredients together really well. I usually find the amounts in our recipe below are spot on, but make sure you taste the sauce to see if you want it spicier or milder. If it is too spicy, add a bit more mayonnaise and honey. For more heat, add more sriracha.

Tip 2: Storing it. Keep your sauce in an airtight jar or container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Give it a stir before using, then drizzle over just about anything.

Ways to Use It

Bang Bang shrimp is hands-down the most loved dish around here, and we can never resist turning it into Bang Bang shrimp tacos! But honestly, this sauce is a total game-changer on just about everything (think salmon, chicken, tofu, roasted veggies, French fries, potato wedges, burgers, you name it). We love to drizzle it over all sorts of things, but here are a few of our favorites:

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Storing: Keep in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to a week. Stir well before using.
  • Vegan modifications: Use vegan mayo (here’s our homemade vegan mayonnaise) and omit the honey.
  • Healthier version: Substitute the mayonnaise for plain thick yogurt like Icelandic or Greek yogurt. I prefer less tangy options.
