Sportsbooks have Cooper Flagg in rare air ahead of NBA draft
Cooper Flagg is causing sportsbooks to take extreme measures during the 2025 NBA draft.
Flagg’s odds to be the top pick in the draft had reached -100,000 at multiple sportsbooks Thursday morning, meaning a bettor would need to risk $1,000 to win $1 on the Duke product going first. The Dallas Mavericks own the rights to the No. 1 pick.
Victor Wembanyama’s odds also climbed to -100,000 at FanDuel, before the San Antonio Spurs selected him No. 1 in 2023. Flagg’s odds varied at sportsbooks Thursday, ranging from -50,000 at ESPN BET to -10,000 at BetMGM. But at FanDuel, Hard Rock Bet and Caesars Sportsbook, Flagg was -100,000, a price reserved for only the biggest favorites and not often seen in the American betting market.
“The pricing of Flagg to go Number 1 overall is a function of our expectations that he will almost assuredly be the pick,” a trader for FanDuel told ESPN in an email. “While we all expect him to go No. 1, we want to make sure customers who are betting on the draft have the opportunity to bet on the most talked about player.”
Flagg had attracted 95% of the money wagered on FanDuel’s No. 1 pick odds, but only 10% of the total bets placed on the market as of Thursday. Rutgers’ Dylan Harper (200-1) had attracted approximately four times more bets than Flagg. There were also bets on Rutgers’ Ace Bailey (200-1) and Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe (250-1) to be the No. 1 pick, the sportsbook reported.
Neil Walsh, senior vice president of sportsbook for Hard Rock Bet, called Flagg’s -100,000 odds “highly unusual” and “as close to a certainly as our system can handle.” Walsh noted that some bets in the past that had -100,000 odds had lost, including this season in the NHL. Walsh recalled a wager midway through the hockey season placed on the Montreal Canadiens to miss the playoffs at -100,000. The Canadiens, who got off to a slow start to the season, rallied down the stretch to earn a spot in the playoffs.
“Even at -100,000, our players are still using it as an engagement opportunity with the draft, and between singles and parlay legs, Cooper Flagg to be the top-pick is our most-bet market for tonight’s draft,” Walsh said in an email. “And hey, a winning bet is a winning bet – sometimes you just got to see one go through the hoop.”
