The newest baseball team in the collegiate summer level ranks is the Hungry Mothers of Marion, Virginia. The team draws its name from nearby Hungry Mother State Park, a five-square-mile area in the heart of the mountains of southwest Virginia that was one of the original six Virginia State Parks.

Per the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreationthere are numerous theories about the origin of the park’s name, but one is most commonly accepted:

Legend has it that a pioneer named Molly Marley and her small child were captured by a Native American tribe and taken to their mountain camp. Molly and her little one eventually escaped and wandered through the woods foraging for food and searching for shelter. One day Molly collapsed from exhaustion, and the youngster continued along the creek until help was found. The only words the child could utter were “Hungry Mother.” A search party later found Molly dead at the foot of the mountain near the creek.

When it came to naming the team, the legend of the hungry mother provided inspiration.

“When you hear the story about this mother starving to death so that her child could live, that’s dedication, that’s self sacrifice—a lot of the things that baseball is about,” said Hungry Mothers managing partner Terry Hindle.

With its branding, the team offers a twist on the term Hungry Mothers. The logos, created by illustrator Brittain Peck (of Carolina Disco Turkeys fame), feature a mama bear, complete with nightcap and gown, set in a palette of red, black, brown, and white.

“We want to stand out. It is a crowded landscape now,” Hindle said. “This will make it fun, it’ll make it unique, and ultimately the goal is to make something that the people of southwest Virginia will be proud of.”
