Colts release kicker Matt Gay two years after giving him big deal

The Indianapolis Colts released kicker Matt Gay on Thursday, two years after signing him to a four-year, $22.5 million contract.

Gay, 31, has converted 82.1% of his field goal attempts (64 of 78) and 98.6% of his extra point attempts (68 of 69) in two years with the Colts after signing with the team as a free agent in 2023.

He earned the contract with Indianapolis after a stellar three-year run with the Los Angeles Rams, when he converted 92.5% of his field goal attempts (74 of 80), including going 12-of-15 on kicks of 50 or more yards, and 97.9% of his point-after attempts (95 of 97).

A fifth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019, Gay has a career success rate of 85.5% on field goal attempts (165 of 193) and 96.3% on point-after attempts (206 of 214).

Gay’s release makes Spencer Shrader the lone kicker on the Colts’ roster.
