All three jerseys prominently display a script “Houston” wordmark across the chest above a block number font, as well as a contrasting collar and cuffs.

It’s worth noting, however, that the home red and white road jerseys include a single-colour wordmark and numbers, whereas the light blue jersey features a red stroke around the white typography.

The uniforms are complete with red and white pants that have a single stripe down the side, as well as the addition of a thick white stripe to their red helmets.

The Cougars haven’t had a stripe on their standard red helmets since 2016, though that doesn’t include the 1968-78 throwback uniforms they wore in a 59-49 loss to Temple in 2018.

Meanwhile, the slightly updated “Houston Blue” alternate design is another signal that the Cougars are doubling down on their right to use the shade of blue often associated with the NFL’s Houston Oilers.

They initially wore Oilers-inspired football uniforms in 2023, but received a cease-and-desist letter from the league and the Tennessee Titans, who retain ownership of the Oilers’ logo and colour scheme.

Houston removed the Oilers-style stripes from the uniforms but kept the colours, citing the iconic street markers seen throughout the city and the police department’s signature blue cars and helicopters for their continued use.

The Cougars then unveiled matching baseball, basketball, softball, golf and volleyball uniforms, effectively adding “Houston Blue” to their official colour scheme as it spreads among their 17 varsity sports.

That said, Houston’s new home uniforms will make their on-field debut against Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 28, while the “Houston Blue” alternate set will be worn against Texas Tech on Oct. 4.
