The collegiate summer level Madison Mallards will celebrate the small part that their hometown played in one of the most significant alternative rock albums of all time. While most of the classic Nirvana album Nevermind was recorded in California, the track “Polly” was recorded in Madison’s Smart Studios, produced by Madison-native Butch Vig.

The temporary brand features a recreation of the iconic album cover, with Mallards mascot Maynard standing in for Nirvana’s naked baby (complete with what one can only assume is Maynard’s naked ding dong), floating toward a hot dog instead of a soggy one dollar bill.

Neverminds patch

The jersey features a sleeve patch that evokes Nirvana’s easily recognizable X-eye smiley face logo, but with Maynard once again standing in.

This is the second year in a row that Madison’s connection to popular culture has inspired a Mallards alternate identity. Last year, the team played as the Motivational Speakers, a tribute to Madison native Chris Farley’s iconic Saturday Night Live character.

The Mallards, a member of the Northwoods League, will take the field as the Neverminds July 5.
