The newest franchise in the ECHL is ready to rule the night with its new name and logo.

The ownership group behind the expansion franchise in North Carolina, which is set to take the ice for the 2025-26 ECHL season, unveiled their name and logo on Tuesday, January 14, during an event at Piedmont Hall. The team will be known as the Greensboro Gargoylesand they’ll sport a purple, black, grey and yellow color scheme.

The team’s primary logo features a grey gargoyle — a stone carving found on buildings that is said to ward off evil spirits — with purple wings crouching over a hockey stick. Underneath the gargoyle, the team name is spelled out in a gothic font, with the city name under that. The whole logo has a yellow outline.

Secondary logos include a beveled wordmark; the gargoyle on its own; an isolated gargoyle head with yellow eyes and a purple outline; and a grey gothic blackletter G with a purple outline.

The Gargoyles logos were created by The Barn Creative. The name was inspired by community input, including more than 2,000 submissions from fans.

Aside from the name and logo, the Gargoyles had another big piece of news to share on Tuesday when it was revealed that the hosts and producer of the popular Spittin’ Chiclets podcast had signed on as minority owners of the team. Paul Bissonnette, Keith Yandle, Ryan Whitney and Mike Grinnell each purchased a stake in the team from majority owner Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, which also owns two other ECHL teams — the Jacksonville Icemen and the Savannah Ghost Pirates — and the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

The Gargoyles will play their home games in the 22,000-seat First Horizon Coliseum. Greensboro has had two previous teams in the ECHL, the Greensboro Monarchs (1989-1995) and the Greensboro Generals (1999-2004). Greensboro was also the home of the AHL’s Carolina Monarchs from 1995 to 1997, and the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes played in the city for two seasons (1997-1999) while their arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, was being completed.

The Gargoyles will be the ECHL’s 30th team when they officially join the league next season.
