The Edmonton Oil Kings are taking a trip into the past this weekend, and they’ll be heading there by airplane.

The Western Hockey League club unveiled new throwback jerseys on Tuesday, March 11, which they’ll wear when they take on the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday, March 15, at Rogers Place. The jerseys are an homage to the Edmonton Flyers, a team that played out of the Edmonton Gardens from 1940 to 1963.

The jerseys are mostly yellow with three blue stripes around the waist and blue stripes running down the sleeves. The front of the jerseys feature a yellow fighter jet with “EDMONTON” written across the fuselage on top of a blue diamond. Instead of being on the sleeves, small player numbers appear on the left chest in a blue retro block font with a white outline.

The collar of the jersey is blue with white laces at the front. The Oil Kings’ primary logo sits on each shoulder.

On the back of the jersey, names and numbers are blue with white outlines.

Game-worn jerseys will be raffled and auctioned off during Saturday’s game, with proceeds benefitting the Edmonton Oil Kings Education Association.

The Edmonton Flyers began in 1940 as an amateur senior hockey team, and they played at that level until 1951, though they didn’t operate between 1941 and 1945 due to the Second World War. They first played in the Alberta Senior Hockey League and then the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. In 1947, the Flyers were nominated to represent Canada at the Ice Hockey World Championships, though ultimately a lack of funding prevented the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association from actually sending them to Czechoslovakia. In 1948, the Flyers won the WCSHL championship, and then went on to win the Allan Cup, Canada’s national senior hockey championship.

In 1951, the Flyers became a minor professional team and joined the Pacific Coast Hockey League, which was later renamed the Western Hockey League in 1952. The Flyers won the WHL championship three times (1953, 1955, 1962) and racked up 30 or more wins in nine of the 12 seasons they played in the league. Notable alumni include Al Arbour, Johnny Bucyk, Glenn Hall, and Forbes Kennedy.

Former Flyer Bruce MacGregor — who played with the team during the 1960-61 season — will be on hand at Saturday’s game to participate in the ceremonial faceoff. MacGregor went on to play more than 1,000 games in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers, along with more than 130 games in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers.

Puck drop between the Oil Kings and Raiders on Saturday is at 7 p.m. MT.
